Winter can be a challenging time for motivation, especially when working from home. Though we have the luxury of not battling long and busy commutes, we instead face cold weather, shorter days and less daylight, all making it difficult to stay focused and productive.

Here are some tips to help you sustain motivation this winter.

  • Create a routine: Establish a daily routine that includes a consistent work schedule and breaks. This will help you stay on track and increase your productivity. Ensure you get up regularly to move around between each task you complete, and set aside time in your day to eat and drink properly.

  • Get outside: Though the weather is often uninviting at this time of year, make sure you take a walk every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Getting some fresh air and daylight will improve your mood and help you recharge. Particularly in the UK, our bodies receive very little Vitamin D during the winter months – in fact, the National Diet and Nutrition Survey shows that about 1 in 6 adults in the UK have low levels of vitamin D in their blood. Low Vitamin D can cause symptoms of tiredness and fatigue.

  • Exercise: Exercise is a great way to boost energy levels and maintain motivation. Incorporate physical activity into your daily routine, whether it’s yoga, running, or strength training. It is suggested that we should be aiming for 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, but incorporate into your routine what works for you and makes you feel good.

  • Stay organised: Keeping your workspace organised will help you stay focused and on top of your tasks. Invest in the right lighting and the right equipment to help you to maintain good ergonomics when your job may require you to sit for long periods of time.

  • Connect with others: Working from home can be isolating, so it’s important to connect with others regularly. Schedule virtual coffee breaks or video chats with coworkers to stay connected and motivated. Ensure you are socialising outside of working hours to create boundaries and facilitate downtime for yourself to decompress.

  • Set achievable goals: Setting goals and breaking them down into smaller tasks can help you stay focused and motivated. Celebrate your accomplishments and keep moving forward.

  • Treat yourself: Finally, make sure to treat yourself for your hard work. Take a relaxing bath, read a book, or indulge in your favourite hobby. Downtime and detachment from will help you to separate your mind from work, despite often spending this time in the same environment.

Remember, staying motivated during the winter months takes effort and self-care. Prioritise your well-being and make time for the things that bring you joy. With these tips, you can make the most of this winter season and stay productive, even without the separation of an office environment.
